Windows 10/11: Reset This PC (No DVD Required)
Windows includes a built-in "Reset this PC” feature that can reinstall the operating system without any DVD or restore media. This is useful when profiles are corrupted, the system is unstable, or you want a fresh start.
Before You Begin
- Back up important files to an external drive or cloud storage.
- Make sure you know your Microsoft account password.
- Record license keys for Office, Adobe, or other paid software.
- Keep the laptop plugged in during the reset.
- Have a stable internet connection if choosing Cloud Download.
Reset This PC (From Windows)
- Open Settings (Windows + I).
- Select System then Recovery.
- Click Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
- Select Cloud download or Local reinstall.
- Review the summary and click Reset.
Reset From the Recovery Environment (If You Can't Sign In)
- From the sign-in screen, hold Shift and click Restart.
- OR power the PC on/off three times to trigger recovery mode.
- Select Troubleshoot → Reset this PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
- Select Cloud download or Local reinstall.
Cloud Download vs Local Reinstall
- Cloud download: Downloads a fresh copy of Windows. Best if system files are damaged.
- Local reinstall: Uses files already on the device. Best for slow or limited internet.
After the Reset
- Complete the Windows setup screens.
- Reinstall your apps and printers.
- Restore your backed-up files.
