Performance In Plain Language

Both systems are built for demanding work such as Eclipse, Dragon, Speechmatics, gaming, photo and video editing, CAD and CAM. Real world speed comes mainly from two things:

  1. The amount of RAM (memory)
  2. The speed of the SSD (storage drive)

The M8600 supports faster RAM speeds and can use a Generation 5 SSD such as the 9100 Pro.Fully configured with 96GB of RAM, a 9100 Pro as the C drive, and a 990 Pro as the seconddrive, the M8600 is the fastest laptop we can build.

However, if you reduce the RAM in the M8600 to keep the price down, performance can drop. For realtime work, more RAM usually matters more than the difference between a very fastGen 4 SSD and a Gen 5 SSD.

A fully maxed out M8650 with 96GB of RAM and two 990 Pro SSDs can actually be faster thanan M8600 that has only 64GB of RAM, even if the M8600 has a 9100 Pro drive. It is thecombination of maximum RAM and fast SSDs that makes the biggest difference.

Which One Should I Choose?

Choose the M8600 if:

  • You want the fastest possible laptop.
  • You want the strongest graphics platform.
  • You want the option to use a Gen 5 SSD (9100 Pro).
  • You want the best long term platform for local Speechmatics and other heavy workloads.

Choose the M8650 if:

  • You want top tier performance at a more manageable price.
  • You want to maximize RAM and SSD capacity without stretching the budget.
  • You want a powerful, well balanced system that is easier to justify cost wise.

For Speechmatics, Dragon, and Eclipse Users

If you plan to run local Speechmatics now or in the future, both models can be configuredto handle it. The key is to choose:

  • At least 64GB of RAM (96GB strongly recommended).
  • The fastest SSDs available (990 Pro, and 9100 Pro on the M8600).

The M8600, fully configured, gives you the highest ceiling for local Speechmatics and otherintensive tasks. The M8650 gives you excellent performance and may be the better choice ifyou want to keep the price more comfortable while still running demanding software.

If you are unsure which way to go, feel free to contact us. Tell us how you work today andwhat you plan to run in the future, and we can recommend a configuration that fits both yourworkflow and your budget.

M8600 vs. M9700 Performance Comparison

Both the M8600 and M9700 are extremely powerful laptops built for demanding professionalworkflows. They share the same Intel Ultra 9 275HX processor, but differ in memory capacity, memory speed, graphics power, cooling design, and overall performance ceiling.

Side by Side Specifications

Feature M8600 M9700
CPU Intel Ultra 9 275HX Intel Ultra 9 275HX
Max RAM Up to 96GB DDR5 6400 Up to 192GB DDR5 4000
RAM Strength Faster RAM speed Much larger RAM capacity
Graphics NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti (12GB) NVIDIA RTX 5080 (16GB)
SSD Support Triple NVMe, one Gen 5 slot Triple NVMe, one Gen 5 slot
Cooling and Power High performance cooling Larger chassis, higher sustained wattage
Best Use Case Maximum speed in a lighter chassis Highest performance for heavy workloads

Performance Notes

The M8600 supports faster RAM speeds, up to DDR5 6400, and offers excellent performancewhen configured with 96GB of RAM and a Gen 5 SSD such as the 9100 Pro. It is extremely fastand ideal for users who want maximum speed in a lighter and more compact system.

The M9700 supports up to 192GB of RAM, which is double the capacity of the M8600. Eventhough the RAM speed is slower, the larger memory pool allows the M9700 to keep far moredata in RAM without paging to the SSD. For large projects, AI workloads, Speechmatics,Dragon, Eclipse, CAD, CAM, and video editing, this can result in significantly higherperformance.

The M9700 also includes a stronger GPU (RTX 5080) and a larger cooling system, allowing itto sustain higher performance levels for longer periods of time.

Which One Is Faster?

  • The M8600 is faster only in memory light workloads that benefit from high RAM speed.
  • The M9700 is faster in almost all heavy workloads due to its larger RAM capacity, stronger GPU, and better thermal design.
  • Both models support a Gen 5 SSD, so storage speed is equal.

Summary of Specification Breakdown

If you want the fastest possible laptop for large projects, AI, Speechmatics, Dragon,Eclipse, CAD, CAM, or video editing, the M9700 is the top performer. Its 192GB RAMcapacity, stronger GPU, and larger cooling system give it a higher performance ceiling.

If you want a lighter system with extremely fast RAM and excellent overall performance, the M8600 is a great choice. Fully configured, it is one of the fastest laptops available, but it cannot match the M9700 in workloads that require more than 96GB of RAM or extendedGPU power.

Both systems are outstanding. The best choice depends on whether you value maximum RAMcapacity and GPU strength (M9700) or faster RAM speed and a lighter chassis (M8600).
