OneDrive is a cloud storage service built into Windows that automatically syncs your Desktop, Documents, and other folders to the cloud. While this can be helpful on a general-purpose home computer, it can create serious performance issues on a court reporter or captioner laptop.
Why OneDrive Causes Problems for Court Reporters
- Background Syncing: OneDrive constantly uploads and downloads files, which can interrupt realtime performance and increase latency.
- File Location Confusion: Files may be stored in the cloud instead of locally, causing delays or missing files during jobs.
- Offline Access Issues: If you are in a courtroom with poor internet, cloud-only files may not be available when needed.
- Resource Usage: Syncing, indexing, and conflict resolution can consume CPU and disk resources required for realtime dictation.
For these reasons, M-Tech recommends unlinking and disabling OneDrive on all court reporter and captioner systems.
Option 1: Remove OneDrive Completely (Recommended)
If you do not use OneDrive or prefer to avoid any risk of background syncing, you can remove it from your system before your optimization session.
Step-by-step instructions are here:
Remove OneDrive (Step-by-Step Guide)
This guide explains how to unlink OneDrive, disable it from startup, and ensure your files are stored locally.
Option 2: Keep OneDrive, But Control It
If you want to keep OneDrive available but prevent it from interfering with realtime work, you can disable automatic syncing and only turn it on when needed.
How to Control OneDrive Safely
- Disable OneDrive from starting automatically:
- Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
- Click the Startup tab.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive.
- Right-click and choose Disable.
This prevents OneDrive from running unless you open it manually.
- Unlink OneDrive from your Desktop and Documents folders:
- Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Select Settings > Sync and Backup (or Account tab on older versions).
- Turn off syncing for Desktop, Documents, and Pictures.
This keeps your working files local and prevents cloud-only files.
- Use OneDrive manually when needed:
- Open OneDrive from the Start Menu only when you want to upload or download files.
- Close OneDrive when finished.
This gives you cloud access without background activity.
This option is useful for users who want cloud backup but need full control over when syncing occurs.
How M-Tech Handles OneDrive During Optimization
During your optimization session, we ensure that OneDrive is not interfering with your system. This includes:
- Verifying that OneDrive is unlinked from your Microsoft account
- Disabling OneDrive from starting with Windows
- Ensuring your Documents and Desktop folders are stored locally
- Confirming that no cloud-only files remain in critical working directories
These steps help prevent lag, audio delays, and realtime interruptions.
