2. Use Windows Security for Core Protection

Windows Security is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. It provides real-time protection, scanning, ransomware protection, and security updates.

Open Windows Security

Click Start, type Windows Security, and open the app.

Key Sections

Current Threats

  • Shows active threats or recent detections.
  • Run a Quick Scan for fast checking.
  • Use Full Scan or Custom Scan for deeper checks.

Virus and Threat Protection Settings

  • Real-time protection should always be ON.
  • Cloud-delivered protection should be ON.
  • Automatic sample submission should be ON.
  • Exclusions should only be used for trusted files.

Protection Updates

  • Security intelligence updates keep Windows aware of new threats.
  • Click Check for updates to confirm you are current.

3. Ransomware Protection

Windows includes Controlled Folder Access to block unknown apps from changing files in protected folders.

  • Open Windows Security.
  • Select Virus and Threat Protection.
  • Select Manage Ransomware Protection.
  • Turn on Controlled Folder Access.

You can also connect OneDrive for file recovery if ransomware occurs.

4. Signs Your PC May Be Infected

  • Slow performance or freezing.
  • Unexpected pop-ups or ads.
  • Browser redirects to unknown pages.
  • Programs opening or closing on their own.
  • Security tools disabled without your action.

5. What To Do If You Suspect Infection

  • Run a Full Scan in Windows Security.
  • Disconnect from the internet if ransomware is suspected.
  • Remove unknown programs from Apps and Features.
  • Check browser extensions for anything unfamiliar.
  • Restart the PC and run another scan.

6. Preventing Future Threats

  • Keep Windows Update turned on.
  • Do not open email attachments from unknown senders.
  • Avoid downloading software from untrusted websites.
  • Use strong, unique passwords.
  • Enable two-factor authentication where possible.
