GPU Mode Guidance: Hybrid vs NVIDIA-Only

M-Tech systems with both Intel and NVIDIA graphics can operate in two different GPU modes: Hybrid Mode and NVIDIA-Only Mode. Each mode affects performance, external monitor behavior, battery life, and system stability. This guide explains the differences and helps you choose the best mode for your workflow.

1. What Is Hybrid GPU Mode?

Hybrid Mode uses both the Intel GPU and the NVIDIA GPU. The Intel GPU handles most display output, while the NVIDIA GPU activates only when needed for heavier tasks.

Advantages of Hybrid Mode

  • Lower power usage
  • Longer battery life
  • Reduced heat during light workloads

Disadvantages of Hybrid Mode

  • External monitors routed through the Intel GPU
  • Higher latency for Dragon and audio workflows
  • Occasional display flicker or handshake delays
  • Reduced performance in GPU-heavy applications

2. What Is NVIDIA-Only Mode?

NVIDIA-Only Mode disables the Intel GPU and routes all display output directly through the NVIDIA GPU. This mode provides maximum stability and performance.

Advantages of NVIDIA-Only Mode

  • Lower latency for Dragon and Speechmatics
  • More stable external monitor behavior
  • Better performance in demanding applications
  • Reduced display flicker and handshake issues

Disadvantages of NVIDIA-Only Mode

  • Higher power usage
  • Shorter battery life
  • More heat during heavy workloads

3. Recommended Mode for Court Reporters and Voice Writers

For Dragon, Speechmatics, and CAT software, we strongly recommend NVIDIA-Only Mode. This mode provides:

  • Lower latency
  • More stable audio paths
  • Fewer external monitor issues
  • Better overall system responsiveness

Hybrid Mode is acceptable for travel or battery-focused use, but not ideal for professional dictation or multi-monitor setups.

4. How to Switch GPU Modes

GPU mode switching is handled through the system firmware (BIOS) or through M-Tech’s configuration tools, depending on your model. If you are unsure how to switch modes, contact M-Tech for guidance.

5. Symptoms of the Wrong GPU Mode

If you are in the wrong mode for your workflow, you may notice:

  • Dragon lag or delayed dictation
  • External monitor flicker or black screens
  • Audio device switching
  • High latency in CAT software
  • Display handshake delays when docking

Switching to NVIDIA-Only Mode resolves most of these issues.

6. Summary

Hybrid Mode is for battery life. NVIDIA-Only Mode is for performance and stability.

For court reporters, voice writers, and anyone using Dragon or Speechmatics, NVIDIA-Only Mode is the recommended choice.
