How to create a system image in Windows

System Image Backup Guide

Steps to Create a System Image

  • ☑ Connect an external hard drive with enough free space (at least the size of your system drive).
  • ☑ Open the Control Panel (Windows + S → type "Control Panel”).
  • ☑ Go to System and Security → Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
  • ☑ On the left, click Create a system image.
  • ☑ Select your external drive as the backup destination.
  • ☑ Choose the drives you want to include (usually C: plus system reserved partitions).
  • ☑ Click Start backup and wait for the process to finish.
  • ☑ When prompted, create a system repair disc or use your recovery drive.

Tips for Customers

  • Storage: Use a dedicated external drive for backups. Don’t store other files on it.
  • Frequency: Update your system image after major updates or software installs.
  • Labeling: Clearly label the backup drive (e.g., "System Image – Dec 2025”).
  • Testing: Verify the backup by checking that Windows recognizes the image.
  • Security: Keep the drive in a safe place, ideally disconnected when not in use.
  • Recovery: To restore, boot from your recovery drive and select "Restore from a system image.”

 Recovery Drive Checklist

Steps to Create a Recovery Drive

  • ☑ Use a USB drive with at least 16 GB (32 GB recommended).
  • ☑ Back up any files — the process erases everything.
  • ☑ Plug in your USB drive.
  • ☑ Search for Recovery Drive in Windows and open the app.
  • ☑ Allow admin permissions if prompted.
  • ☑ Check "Back up system files to the recovery drive” and click Next.
  • ☑ Select your USB drive from the list and click Next.
  • ☑ Confirm deletion of all data and click Create.
  • ☑ Wait 10–30 minutes for completion.
  • ☑ Click Finish, safely eject, and label the drive clearly.

How to Use Later

  • ☑ Insert the recovery drive into your PC.
  • ☑ Restart and open the boot menu (F12, F2, Esc, or Del).
  • ☑ Select the USB drive to boot from.
  • ☑ Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to troubleshoot, restore, or reinstall Windows.
Notes:
  • ☑ Each recovery drive is specific to the PC it was created on.
  • ☑ For a universal installer, use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool.
