Performance In Plain Language

Both systems are built for demanding work such as Eclipse, Dragon, Speechmatics, gaming, photo and video editing, CAD and CAM. Real world speed comes mainly from two things:

1. The amount of RAM (memory)
2. The speed of the SSD (storage drive)

The M8600 supports faster RAM speeds and can use a Generation 5 SSD like the 9100 Pro. Fully loaded with 96GB of RAM, a 9100 Pro as the C drive, and a 990 Pro as the second drive, it’s the fastest laptop we can build. However, cutting down the RAM to save costs can hurt performance. For real-time work, having RAM often matters more than the gap between a high-end Gen 4 SSD and a Gen 5 SSD. In fact, a fully maxed-out M8650 with 96GB of RAM and two 990 Pro SSDs can outperform an M8600 with only 64GB of RAM, even if the latter has a 9100 Pro. The real performance boost comes from the combination of maximum RAM and SSDs.

Which One Should I Choose?

Choose the M8600 if:

• You want the fastest possible laptop.
• You want the strongest graphics platform.
• You want the option to use a Gen 5 SSD (9100 Pro).
• You want the best long term platform for local Speechmatics and other heavy workloads.

Choose the M8650 if:

• You want top tier performance at a more manageable price.
• You want to maximize RAM and SSD capacity without stretching the budget.
• You want a powerful, well balanced system that is easier to justify cost wise.

For Speechmatics, Dragon, and Eclipse Users

If you plan to run Speechmatics locally now or in the future, both models can be configured to handle it. The key is to choose:

• At least 64GB of RAM (96GB strongly recommended).
• The fastest SSDs available (990 Pro, and 9100 Pro on the M8600).

The fully configured M8600 offers the highest potential for local Speechmatics and other intensive tasks. The M8650 delivers excellent performance and might be the better option if you’re looking to keep costs more manageable while still handling demanding software.
