M8600 vs. M8650 Laptop Comparison

Both the M8600 and M8650 are extremely fast, professional grade systems. The M8650 deliversoutstanding performance at a more approachable price, while the M8600 pushes into a higher tierwith stronger graphics, faster RAM support, and the option for a Generation 5 SSD.

Quick Links

Side by Side Overview

Feature M8650 M8600
CPU Intel Ultra 9 275HX Intel Ultra 9 275HX
Display 15.6 inch 16 inch
Max RAM Up to 96GB DDR5 5600 Up to 96GB DDR5 6400
Graphics NVIDIA RTX 5060 (8GB) NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti (12GB)
SSD Support Triple NVMe, all Gen 4 Triple NVMe, one Gen 5 slot (9100 Pro capable)
Typical Use Top tier performance at a more manageable price Maximum performance, strongest graphics, Gen 5 SSD option

Performance In Plain Language

Both systems are built for demanding work such as Eclipse, Dragon, Speechmatics, gaming, photo and video editing, CAD and CAM. Real world speed comes mainly from two things:

  1. The amount of RAM (memory)
  2. The speed of the SSD (storage drive)

The M8600 supports faster RAM speeds and can use a Generation 5 SSD such as the 9100 Pro.Fully configured with 96GB of RAM, a 9100 Pro as the C drive, and a 990 Pro as the seconddrive, the M8600 is the fastest laptop we can build.

However, if you reduce the RAM in the M8600 to keep the price down, performance can drop. For realtime work, more RAM usually matters more than the difference between a very fastGen 4 SSD and a Gen 5 SSD.

A fully maxed out M8650 with 96GB of RAM and two 990 Pro SSDs can actually be faster thanan M8600 that has only 64GB of RAM, even if the M8600 has a 9100 Pro drive. It is thecombination of maximum RAM and fast SSDs that makes the biggest difference.

Which One Should I Choose?

Choose the M8600 if:

  • You want the fastest possible laptop.
  • You want the strongest graphics platform.
  • You want the option to use a Gen 5 SSD (9100 Pro).
  • You want the best long term platform for local Speechmatics and other heavy workloads.

Choose the M8650 if:

  • You want top tier performance at a more manageable price.
  • You want to maximize RAM and SSD capacity without stretching the budget.
  • You want a powerful, well balanced system that is easier to justify cost wise.

For Speechmatics, Dragon, and Eclipse Users

If you plan to run local Speechmatics now or in the future, both models can be configuredto handle it. The key is to choose:

  • At least 64GB of RAM (96GB strongly recommended).
  • The fastest SSDs available (990 Pro, and 9100 Pro on the M8600).

The M8600, fully configured, gives you the highest ceiling for local Speechmatics and otherintensive tasks. The M8650 gives you excellent performance and may be the better choice ifyou want to keep the price more comfortable while still running demanding software.

If you are unsure which way to go, feel free to contact us. Tell us how you work today andwhat you plan to run in the future, and we can recommend a configuration that fits both yourworkflow and your budget.

Comments: I have been a voicewriting court reporter for the last 5 years. I have used a few different computers. While my writing improved, it never really got where I wanted it. I got this computer before a very page-heavy week. It handled 300-plus pages a day with ease. Plus, it didn't get bogged down towards the end of the day. I had several requested readbacks, and I nailed every single one. The pace was so fast that there was no way I could have done that with my old computer. If you want to up your ... More details

"My 10th M-Tech Laptop"

Comments: Over the last ten years, I have put into use 10 M-Tech laptops. Each one has been top notch and performed very very well. This newest purchase is right in line with all the others that I have gotten. Out of the 10 laptops, 8 are still in service! The 2 that finally died after years of service next to the ocean finally rusted out. You cannot get better computers than M-Tech

"Great Computer for Voice Writers"

on 4/12/2023 3:38:29 PM

No rating

Comments: I am absolutely new to Voice Writing. I didn’t know what computer to go with. I decided to go with a brand name computer, for example, a Dell laptop, and it was the worst decision I ever made. Dell worked great for me in the past . So I went with what I knew. I should have waited for my instructor’s recommendation, but I got anxious. Even though I purchased the Dell with all the required Specs it did not perform well. My voice recognition was horrible. I finally bit the bullet and purchased the ... More details
