M-Tech Tweak Session Preparation Guide

Thank you for scheduling your complimentary optimization session. This guide will help you prepare your system so the process is smooth, efficient, and successful. Please complete the steps below before your appointment.

IMPORTANT WARNING FOR COURT REPORTERS

Before your optimization session, do NOT use the laptop for general internet browsing, email, social media, or downloading anything other than your required software and Windows updates.

Court reporting systems are extremely sensitive to background activity. Even one unwanted program, browser extension, or background service can interfere with realtime performance. This laptop will be configured as a Voice Stenography System, not a general-purpose PC, and keeping it clean before your session is critical for best results.

1. Unpack and Inspect Your Laptop

Remove the laptop from the box, plug it in, and power it on. If anything appears damaged or unusual, contact us before proceeding.

2. Locate and Activate Your Windows Product Key

Your activation code is located on the bottom of the laptop. It is covered by a protective scratch-off label.

To reveal your activation code:

  • Turn the laptop over and locate the scratch-off label.
  • Use a fingernail or a plastic card to gently scratch the surface.
  • Do NOT use anything sharp or metal, as this may damage the code.
  • Once revealed, enter the code when Windows prompts you for activation.

If Windows does not prompt you automatically, you can enter the code manually by opening Settings > System > Activation.

3. Connect to the Internet

Use a reliable internet connection. A wired connection is ideal, but Wi-Fi is fine as long as the signal is strong and stable.

4. Install All Required Programs

Install your court reporting or captioning software, CAT dictionaries, audio utilities, and any other applications you plan to use. Do not worry about configuration; we will handle that during the session.

5. Complete All Windows Updates

Open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates. Restart the system as many times as needed until Windows reports that you are fully up to date.

6. Download UltraViewer

Download UltraViewer from www.ultraviewer.net and have it open and ready at the start of your appointment. This is the remote access tool we use to perform the optimization.

7. Create a Recovery Drive (Strongly Recommended)

We recommend creating a recovery drive before your session. This allows you to restore your system quickly if needed.

Preferred Method: Use a good quality USB flash drive, 32GB in size. This is the most reliable and compatible option for modern systems.

Quick Instructions:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box.
  2. Type the following and press Enter:
    recoverydrive.exe
  3. When the Recovery Drive tool opens, check the box that says "Back up system files to the recovery drive."
  4. Click Next and select your USB flash drive.
  5. Click Create and wait for the process to finish.

Alternative Method: You may create a DVD recovery disc if you prefer, but USB is recommended first due to speed and reliability.

8. Prepare Your Workspace

Have the following items ready at the time of your appointment:

  • Your laptop plugged into power
  • UltraViewer open and running
  • Your steno machine (if applicable)
  • A can of compressed air
  • Your external DVD burner and a blank disc (only if you already own one)

9. Avoid Using the Laptop for General Internet Browsing

If you are a court reporter or captioner, please avoid checking email or browsing the internet before your optimization session. This prevents unwanted software, clutter, or malware from affecting performance. It is fine to use the internet only for downloading your programs and updates.

10. Be Ready for Phase 1 and Phase 2 Optimization

Phase 1 focuses on performance, stability, and removing unnecessary background activity. Phase 2 applies deeper system-level adjustments that improve realtime performance and reduce latency. Completing the steps above ensures both phases run smoothly.
