Speechmatics for Court Reporters | Your Guide to Cloud & Local Realtime

Your guide to the future of realtime.

Speechmatics is rapidly becoming one of the most important tools in modern court reporting. Whether you are exploring it for the first time or already using it every day, this page is your starting point for clear, practical guidance.

M-Tech has supported realtime reporters for more than two decades, and we are building a dedicated space to help you understand Speechmatics, optimize it, and choose the right hardware for your workflow. This is your hub. From here, you can explore everything you need to know.

What Is Speechmatics?

Speechmatics is a next-generation speech engine designed for accuracy, speed, and flexibility. Reporters use it for realtime, captioning, and backup audio workflows. Unlike traditional engines, Speechmatics can run in multiple ways: in the cloud, on a local appliance, or directly on your laptop (when licensed and configured for local use).

Cloud vs Local Speechmatics

Speechmatics is best known as a cloud engine, but many reporters do not realize it can also run locally. Local Speechmatics removes dependency on courtroom Wiâ€ÃƒÂ¢€Ã‹Å“Fi and can reduce latency. Cloud Speechmatics offers convenience and portability. Both have strengths, and we will help you understand which is right for your workflow.

What Is the Boost Box?

Some reporters use a dedicated Speechmatics appliance (often called a Boost Box) to run the engine locally. This bypasses the cloud entirely and delivers consistent, lowâ€ÃƒÂ¢€Ã‹Å“latency performance. In some setups, if you use a Boost Box, you may also be eligible for a local Speechmatics install on your laptop.

Do You Need a High-End Laptop?

Cloud Speechmatics can run on almost any modern system. Local Speechmatics is different. Running Speechmatics directly on your laptop requires strong CPU performance, stable cooling, fast storage, and low-latency USB and network paths. This is where M-Tech systems are specifically engineered to excel.
